The Valley Initiative for Development and Advancement has been selected as a grantee of the OpenAI Foundation’s People-First AI Fund, a national initiative aimed at supporting community-based nonprofits using artificial intelligence to expand economic opportunity.

VIDA is among 208 nonprofits chosen nationwide to receive a share of $40.5 million in unrestricted funding during the Foundation’s first round of grant awards. Nearly 3,000 organizations applied through an open call process. VIDA was one of a limited number of Texas-based organizations selected.

The People-First AI Fund supports nonprofits that focus on community-centered approaches to artificial intelligence, including organizations with limited prior exposure to AI. The initiative is designed to help local communities adapt to workforce and economic changes driven by emerging technologies.

VIDA was selected based on its work serving low-income students and working adults in the Rio Grande Valley through financial assistance, career navigation, case management and employer partnerships. The organization has also expanded training programs focused on artificial intelligence and technology skills to prepare participants for future workforce demands.

“This recognition reflects the growing innovation and resilience of our Rio Grande Valley community,” said Felida Villarreal, president and chief executive officer of VIDA. “As AI continues to reshape the workforce, this investment helps ensure our community is prepared to adapt and compete.”

Funding from the People-First AI Fund will support VIDA’s workforce development efforts, including the integration of AI literacy and digital skill training aimed at promoting long-term economic mobility.

VIDA has operated in the Rio Grande Valley for more than 30 years and has served more than 7,000 residents through career training programs in high-demand fields. In 2025, the organization served 879 participants, with graduates securing employment earning average annual wages of more than $52,000.
