RIO GRANDE CITY, Texas — The Kelsey-Bass Museum will commemorate Rio Grande City’s founding with a public celebration at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, at the historic Kiosko on Britton Avenue, marking the city’s longstanding role in the history of South Texas.

The annual Founders Day event is intended to recognize the people, traditions and milestones that shaped Rio Grande City and continue to define the community today. The gathering will take place at one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks in the historic downtown area.

Cathy Rubio of the Kelsey-Bass Museum said the celebration provides an opportunity for residents to reflect on the city’s roots and pass its history on to future generations. “Founders Day allows us to honor the families and individuals who helped establish Rio Grande City and to celebrate the rich history that still surrounds us,” Rubio said. “It’s important that we continue sharing these stories so they’re not lost over time.”

Rio Grande City is one of the oldest communities in South Texas, with origins dating back to the mid-1700s, when Spanish settlers established ranching settlements along the Rio Grande. Over time, the city developed into a center for trade, government and culture in what is now Starr County. Its historic downtown district features numerous preserved buildings that reflect Spanish, Mexican and early Texan influences.

The Kelsey-Bass Museum, which organizes the event, focuses on preserving and sharing the history of Rio Grande City and Starr County through exhibits, educational programs and community events. Museum staff said Founders Day is one of several annual efforts aimed at strengthening public awareness of local history.

The Founders Day celebration is free and open to the public.
