In an effort to educate students on the dangers of impaired driving, Rio Grande City officials visited several schools within the Rio Grande City Grulla Independent School District (RGCGISD) last week, just ahead of Spring Break 2025.
Using a DWI simulation, students experienced firsthand how alcohol and impairment affect their ability to drive safely. The interactive approach aimed to reinforce the dangers of driving under the influence and encourage responsible decision-making.
“Our goal is simple: educate, inform, and save lives,” said Interim RGC Police Chief Joey Solis. “Spring break is a time when we see an increase in alcohol-related incidents, and we want to do everything we can to prevent tragedies before they happen.”
The initiative was made possible through collaboration with City of Laredo 9-1-1 Regional Administration, which provided the simulation equipment. Starr County Commissioner Ediel Barrera also participated in the presentations, lending his support to the effort.
“This is about protecting our youth and making sure they understand the very real consequences of impaired driving,” Barrera said. “If even one student makes the decision to never drink and drive, then this initiative has been a success.”
Officials are urging the community to take the message to heart: Think before you drink. Never drive impaired.
