MISSION, Texas — The Mission Historical Museum is bringing back its popular Lecture Series with a presentation focused on food, culture and history along the Texas-Mexico border.
The series returns Saturday, Jan. 10, with a talk by Melissa Guerra, a food writer, historian and eighth-generation South Texan. Her presentation, “Our First Foods: The Origins of Cuisine Along the Texas–Mexico Border,” will explore the earliest food traditions of the Rio Grande region.
The event is scheduled from 11 a.m. to noon at the Mission Historical Museum, located at 900 Doherty Ave. Admission includes complimentary snacks and refreshments.
Guerra’s lecture will examine how the land, culture and history of South Texas helped shape the flavors and foodways still enjoyed in the region today. The talk highlights Indigenous, Spanish and Mexican influences that laid the foundation for border cuisine.
Museum officials say the lecture is intended for anyone interested in local history, food culture or storytelling rooted in the Rio Grande Valley’s past.
