Free Tax Preparations are available at Rio Grande City Hall for residents with a household income of less than $60,000 a year through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Anyone interested in signing up must first make an appointment from Monday through Tuesday only.
“It's that time of year again,” declared RGC Finance Director Leo Leonel Cantu. “The City of Rio Grande City, in collaboration with the United Way of South Texas, will be hosting the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program. To make an appointment or for more information you can call (956)488-8728.”
United Way is an international network of over 1,800 local nonprofit fundraising affiliates. The VITA program is a nationwide initiative supported by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to provide free tax preparation assistance to individuals and families with low to moderate incomes.
VITA operates through trained volunteers who offer their expertise to help eligible taxpayers navigate the tax filing process. These volunteers undergo comprehensive training to ensure they can accurately assist taxpayers in preparing basic tax returns, maximizing eligible credits, and ensuring compliance with tax laws.
The program aims to make tax assistance accessible to those who may not have the financial means to seek professional services, promoting financial literacy and facilitating the filing of accurate and timely tax returns.
