According to a press release from the Rio Grande City CISD, student athlete, Irene Barrera, officially signed to wrestle for an NCAA Division 2 School at a signing ceremony held on Friday, January 11, at Rio Grande City High School.
A senior at Rio Grande City High School, Barrera signed to Gannon University. She has wrestled for two seasons at Rio Grande City High School, and is currently 9-2 this season having placed 1st at the Austin ISD All-Girls Tournament this past December. She was also 1st at the Snakebite Invitational and placed 3rd at the Craig T. Grace CenTex Invitational Tournament in Austin earlier this month.
Barrera also had a very successful season her junior year. She ended the season with a 15-16 record and was a Regional Qualifier.
Gannon University is a private, co-educational Catholic university in Erie, Pennsylvania. Its intercollegiate athletics include 18 athletic programs for men and women at the NCAA Division II level.
