RGC Athletes, Siblings, Headed to Junior Olympic Games



The Rio Grande City Parks & Recreation Dept. recently announced local athletes, and siblings, Alicia and Omar Carreno Jr. are headed to Iowa to compete at the AAU Junior Olympic Games.

Both athletes competed at the AAU Track & Field Region 19 District and Regional Qualifiers earlier this month in Converse, Texas. Alisa qualified for the 1500 meter run and Omar brought home 4 gold medals in the 1500 meter and 800 meter run.


The two now qualify to compete at the 2018 AAU Junior Olympic Games which are set to take place from July 25th through August 4th, in Des Moines, Iowa. 

The AAU Junior Olympic Games are known as the largest national multi-sport event for youth in the United States. It has become the showcase event of the AAU Sports Program. The organization is one of the largest, non-profit, volunteer sports organizations in the country.  Over 34 sports are offered in the 57 AAU Districts.
